Liberty man killed in two-car crash

TOWN OF NEVERSINK – A
34-year-old Liberty man was killed when his car drifted into the opposite
lane of traffic on Route 55 in the Town of Neversink and struck an oncoming
car.

State Police at the Liberty barracks said the 7 a.m. crash claimed the
life of Derrick Yerkes, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the other car, Cheryl Bertholf, 56, of Loch Sheldrake, was
airlifted to Westchester Medical Center and was being treated for rib
fractures and fractured vertebrae.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation and troopers ask
anyone who may have witnessed it to call investigators at the Liberty
barracks at 845-292-6600.

State Police were assisted at the scene by firefighters from Grahamsville,
Neversink and Loch Sheldrake, Mobile Medic Ambulance, Lifenet helicopter
and the state Department of Transportation.
