Norwewgian Air Shuttle will fly Boeing 737s in and out of Stewart

NEW WINDSOR – The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey took over Stewart Airport near Newburgh in November 2007 and was faced almost immediately with the Great Recession.
The authority has spent millions in upgrading infrastructure and has been trying to recruit more air service.
The airport got a big boost recently when Norwegian Air Shuttle said it would operate daily flights between Newburgh and Europe.
Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress President Jonathan Drapkin said this
new development is another step forward in the growth of Stewart.
“Clearly Pattern sees this as another one of the steps in the right direction and that the Port Authority is trying to figure out the best way to utilize Stewart, which is complex. It’s not an easy fix and this is just another good step for them,” Drapkin said.
Orange County Partnership President Maureen Halahan said the new service will put the airport on the map.
“This is our economic windfall here Norwegian coming here to Orange County is going to make all the difference,” Halahan said.
This will not be the first international service at Stewart. Close to 30 years ago, periodic weekend charter flights to Cancun were flown aboard Mexican Airlines.
In the early 1990s, United Express flew short-lived daily service between Stewart and Toronto.
