Habitat management plan for Cranberry Mountain reviewed

TOWN OF PATTERSON – The 1,085-acre Cranbury Mountain Wildlife Management
Area in the Town of Patterson has been completed by the state Department
of Environmental Conservation and will be the subject of a public session
on Wednesday, December 7.

Habitat management goals for Cranberry Mountain WMA include creating 155
acres (14 percent of total WMA acreage) of young forest habitat to provide
food and cover for New England cottontail, American woodcock, white-tailed
deer and wild turkey; creating and maintaining 35 acres of permanent shrublands
(three percent of total WMA acreage) to provide habitat for New England
cottontails; creating and maintaining 35 acres of fields/permanent wildlife
openings (three percent of total WMA acreage) to provide habitat for New
England cottontails, American woodcock, whitetailed deer, and wild turkey
and maintaining 854 acres (79 percent of total WMA acreage) as mature
oak forest to provide habitat for white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and
interior forest nesting raptors.

The DEC briefing will begin at 7 p.m. at Patterson Town Hall on Route
311 in Patterson.
