Ulster murder suspect arraigned, victim identified

TOWN OF SHANDAKEN – A Phoenicia woman, charged with second degree murder, was arraigned in town court this morning, for allegedly causing the death of John Owings Jr, 65 with a combination of alcoholic beverages and prescription drugs.  That apparently happened sometime on November 19, in an apartment at 46 Route 214 in Phoenicia.
Police were called to the scene that evening by the defendant, Solane Verraine, 62, who was charged after further questioning.  tance of Ulster County Sheriff’s Office Detectives after determining that the death was suspicious. The defendant was taken to the Ulster County Law Enforcement Center for questioning. Further investigation revealed that the defendant poisoned the victim.
Verraine remains in the Ulster County Jail without bail.
The Shandaken Police and Ulster County Sheriff’s Office were assisted in the investigation by members of the New York State Police and the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.
