CARMEL – From one side of Putnam County to the other, Veterans Day ceremonies were held on Friday.
Veterans, their family members, friends and neighbors attended events in Carmel, Mahopac, Brewster, Cold Spring and Putnam Valley.
“Veterans have nor deepest gratitude,” County Executive MaryEllen Odell told observances in Mahopac and Kent.
“We are free because of those who gave their lives for freedom’s cause,” said Sheriff Donald Smith, a retired brigadier general in the Army.
Karl Rohde, the county’s director of Veterans Affairs, noted Veterans Day was first called Armistice Day to mark the pact that ended World War I at 11:11 a.m. on November 11, 1918.  The name was changed in 1954.
