NEW PALTZ – As of November 8, Student Health Service at SUNY New Paltz has confirmed 13 cases of mumps on campus including one athletics staff member and several members of the swim team.
Director of Student Health Service Dr. Jack Ordway said that while the state Health Department has indicated that there is minimal risk of transmission, out of an abundance of caution, the college has provided information about precautions.
Per campus protocol, the affected students, who have been immunized against mumps, have been isolated for the recommended period of time.
Twenty students who have not been immunized have been sent home until December as per the Ulster County and State Health Departments. All SUNY New Paltz students are required to provide documentation of two measles, one rubella and one mumps immunization or provide documentation of a religious or other exemption.
Campus tours and general information sessions will continue on campus as scheduled, but affected residence halls will be eliminated until further notice.
Campus departments and units that have events scheduled that involve visitors from off-campus, especially children, should take precautions.
