GOSHEN – Two seminars are scheduled for community leaders designed to provide information about police-civilian deadly-force encounters.  They will take place Tuesday, November 29 and Thursday, December 1 at the Police Chiefs’ Association Police Academy in New Windsor.
The seminars will be conducted by Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler and the Police Chiefs’ Association of Orange County.
Each one will be comprised of two parts – a DA presentation of the dynamics of police-civilian deadly-force encounters, and about the law applicable to those encounters, especially the law of self-defense, or justification. In the second phase, attendees will have an opportunity to use or observe others use the academy’s firearms training simulator.
“Any time a police officer takes the life of a civilian, it’s a tragedy for the deceased, the deceased’s family, and for the officer,” Hoovler said. “Unfortunately, however, all too often some members of the media publicize those events based on incomplete, one-sided information, without waiting for the results of thorough investigations.”
Hoovler said the seminars are designed to give community leaders “a feel for the reality of police-civilian deadly-force encounters.”
This is the second series of the seminars.
Space for the seminars is limited. Contact Robert Conflitti, counsel to the DA or Darlene De Jesus, community affairs coordinator at 845-615-3630 or by email at DACommunityAffairs@orangecountygov.com .
