BEACON – Now that the MTA has asked for ideas for what to do with the Beacon Line, a rail spur that runs from the City of Beacon on the Metro-North Hudson Line to the Harlem Line, Mayor Randy Casale would like a regional approach to the future use.
He would like to see the City of Beacon, Town of Fishkill, Scenic Hudson
and other stakeholders put their heads together to develop a plan.
“The ultimate thing would be light rail to bring passengers and tourists from the county [Poughkeepsie] down to Beacon to the train station and back and a rail trail alongside of it,” Casale said. “If can’t be a light rail trail, at least a rail trail, which would get us all the way to the Walkway Over the Hudson and maybe out to the Harlem Rail Trail so we would have a worldwide destination of trails that run from our train station up across the river up to Ulster County and out to Harlem Valley.”
There is currently no passenger service on the dormant line.
