NEW WINDSOR – Cargo tonnage moving through Stewart Airport is up considerably over previous year levels. This past August, a total of 2,211 tons were handled by Federal Express, UPS and itinerant aircraft compared to 1,195 tons the year before. Year-to-date through August, this year has tied with last year and exceeded 2014 and 2013 levels.
Airport Business Development Director Michael Torelli told the Stewart Airport Commission on Tuesday that the numbers appear to be trending upwards.
“Hopefully it is a sign of economic vitality for the region and maybe for the US in total. We are seeing a lot more stuff being shipped by air; next day service, second day service, things of that nature,” Torelli said.
Passenger service continues to see lower numbers than the three previous years.
Year-to-date through August, 182,133 passengers used Stewart while in 2015, 191,103 passengers flew. In the first eight months of 2014, 210,048 used the airport and in 2013, a total of 216,123 flew through.
