HYDE PARK – Communities
up and down the Hudson River from Yonkers to Kingston are unified in their
opposition to new commercial ship anchorages being proposed at 10 locations.
There is already one anchorage site in Hyde Park and the town board is opposed to the proposed sites, said Deputy Supervisor and Councilwoman Emily Svenson.
“First of all, decide whether any more anchorage grounds are needed at all, but if they are, to look for the locations where there is the least impact to both humans communities and wildlife communities,” Svenson said. “We actually have a large population of Atlantic sturgeon in Hyde Park right off the shoreline, so there is concern about the damage from the anchors and the chains to the habitat of the sturgeon.”
Also joining the opposition to the anchorages is State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, who represents Yonkers, the southern-most point in the plan.
