GOSHEN – In the first half of this year, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office has collected over $1 million in the state’s Crimes Against Revenue Program.
Those include tax and finance cases, insurance, welfare and labor department fraud.
District Attorney David Hoovler said since he took office and placed a strong emphasis on those crimes, the amount of money recouped has steadily increased.
“The first year we had some modest returns, $4,000 or $5,000 in revenue returned,” Hoovler said. “The second year was around the $200,000 mark and this year through the second quarter, we have reached $1.2 million. We are outperforming almost every other county in the state except Manhattan.”
The state gives the county $89,000 annually to partially fund an assistant district attorney to concentrate on those crimes.
Hoovler anticipates by the end of this year to reach the $1.7 million mark in collections.
