KINGSTON – Ulster Country Comptroller Elliott Auerbach has taken a look at the county’s ethics law and he said it is a good start.
Auerbach’s report considered existing language and provided comparisons to ethical procedures of other counties.
“I think that we need to move ourselves in the position of being less reactive and more reform driven and made suggestions after going through the law and looking at a number of different policies,” he said.
Among the comptroller’s recommendations are capping the frequency of allowable gifts to an elected official or employee; regulating taxpayer funded advertising of elected officials; and limiting vendor campaign contributions as Orange County has done by adopting a pay-to-play law limiting the amount a company seeking a contract with the county can donate to the executive to $4,000 over a four-year period.
