Smith: “… most natural and nourishing way …”

CARMEL – Breastfeeding is “the single-most important thing a mother can do,” Putnam County Supervising Public Health Nurse Rebecca Wittenberg said as she welcomed moms to the county’s annual Big Latch-On event on Friday.
Some two dozen moms gathered at the Carmel Firehouse to participate in the program held worldwide to support and promote breastfeeding. Women simultaneously breastfed their children to promote the activity for the good health of the child.
“Data unequivocally indicates that children who are breastfed do better from a health point of view,” Wittenberg said.
“It is the most natural and nourishing way to feed my little man,” said Caitlin Smith of Mahopac. Dianna Rocco of Lake Peekskill said breastfeeding her daughter Alianna was “a beautiful experience.”
State Health officials would like to increase breastfeeding statewide in New York to 80 percent. In Putnam County, it has already reached 88 percent.
