GOSHEN – Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler has announced
a new program aimed at assisting immigrants in the county in dealing with
the criminal justice system.

Conflitti

Under the new program, immigrants who are victimized will have a single
point of contact, Robert Conflitti, counsel to the DA, who will serve
as the immigrant affairs coordinator.

Hoovler got the idea for the new initiative when he talked with a man
following a naturalization ceremony last year and the new citizen conveyed
to him that he had gotten ripped off by an unscrupulous person who charged
him an exorbitant amount of money to maneuver through the process to apply
for citizenship.

In his new role, Conflitti will ensure that an immigrant’s complaint
is routed to the prosecution unit in the DA’s office that is most
appropriate to investigate it.

Victimized immigrants may report any type of crime including violent crimes,
human trafficking, domestic violence, and fraud.
As part of the new program, Hoovler has joined the New York State District
Attorneys’ League of Immigrant Affairs, an organization that comprises
five other NEW DA’s offices – Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn,
the Bronx and Nassau County. Hoovler is also seeking membership in the
Protecting Immigrant New Yorkers Task Force, a coalition of state, local
and federal agencies working together to protect immigrants from being
defrauded.
