Large crowd turned out in Newburgh

NEWBURGH – It was the 19th annual National Night Out in Newburgh Tuesday evening where residents were invited to enjoy free snacks and entertainment hosted by the city.
Lieutenant Richard Carrion said the purpose of the evening was for the
community to take a unified stance against crime and to engage the police
and the public to forge positive relationships.
“It’s about forming partnerships with the community.” Carrion said.  “These are problems that we can’t solve on our own and they are problems that the community cannot solve on their own. Once we recognize, both the community and the police, that we need to work together and we work toward forming these partnerships and establishing open communication lines to be able to solve these problems, we are going to be able to move forward.”
Carrion said this event can help to “ease the tension” between police officers and residents who rally behind the Black Lives Matter movement, and that the only way they have been able to overcome the tension in Newburgh is through engagement.
Newburgh resident Tamika Olivier, who attended the Night Out, said the event “gets everyone in the community to just mingle and get to know each other. It’s pretty positive.”
