PORT JERVIS – Port Jervis Police and Ambulance Corps personnel are being credited with saving the life of a woman, who suffered an apparent heart attack.
Officers responded to a domestic disturbance on July 11 and unrelated to that incident, a 51-year-old woman who was there suffered an apparent heart attack and became unresponsive.  Officers provided immediate medical attention by administering an AED and oxygen to the woman. EMT’s from Port Jervis Ambulance Corps arrived and continued with CPR and chest compressions until the woman regained consciousness. She was transported to Bon Secours Hospital where she recovered.
Ten days later, Police Officer Andrew Haniuk responded to the Port Jervis/Matamoras Delaware River Bridge for a report of a despondent man sitting on the bridge with his leg over the railing.  When the officer arrived, he found the man sitting with both legs over the railing and leaning forward while looking down toward the river.  Officer Haniuk talked to the man, who expressed the will to end his life by jumping off the bridge, but the officer convinced him to come away from the railing where he was taken into protective custody and transported to the hospital for evaluation.
