KINGSTON – Ulster County Executive Michael Hein has signed legislation into law that will enhance real property tax exemptions available to Ulster County veterans.
He inked the changes following their adoption by the state legislature.
The new law raises the ceiling for property tax exemptions extended to honorably discharged veterans and Cold War vets to $45,000, with an additional exemption of up to $30,000 for those vets who served in a combat zone.
The law also provides an additional exemption of up to $150,000 for those vets who have suffered a military service-related disability.
“As Americans we owe a debt to our veterans that we can never truly repay,” Hein said. “This program is designed to help Ulster County recognize the efforts of the brave men and women who have served to protect our life, liberty, and freedom.”
The county executive said that “the sacrifices that they make in protecting our communities and our country as a whole deserve nothing less than the fullest measure of our respect.”
County Legislature Chairman Kenneth Ronk said veterans “have made immeasurable sacrifices on behalf of us all, and we can never forget their commitment to our country and the values we hold so dear.” He said increasing the property tax exemptions “is a small way that Ulster County once again demonstrates its respect for our veterans, recognizes their serve and thanks them for their selfless bravery.”
Legislator Richard Gerentine, who sponsored the resolution, said he wanted vets to know that Ulster County “truly respects and appreciates all they have sacrificed for us.”
