MONTICELLO – Through a partnership with Sullivan Renaissance and the Village of Monticello, Sullivan County will be awarding a total of $5,000 in grants to three Monticello businesses to install outdoor seating. Nelly’s Latin Restaurant and the Monticello Bagel Bakery will each receive reimbursement grants of up to $2,000 for façade improvements and the installation of outdoor seating, while Salt & Pepper the Kitchen will receive $1,000 for a new outdoor seating area.
Sullivan Renaissance originally provided the grant funding to Sullivan County’s Division of Planning and Environmental Management in 2014 as matching funds for a Technical Assistance Grant through the New York Main Street Grant Program. Earlier this year, both parties decided to focus the funding on assistance to improve businesses in the downtown core.
Last month, the county sent letters to all of the property owners in the target area announcing the creation of the “Broadway Monticello Business Improvement Grant Program.” Through this program, property owners and businesses could request up to $2,500 for expenses related to improving curb appeal, such as landscaping, signage, lighting, outdoor seating areas and other exterior improvements. Seven applications were received, and three businesses were awarded grants.
“The Village of Monticello is so excited to see the energy and enthusiasm that it is gaining momentum on Broadway,” remarked Village Manager David Sager. “Not only have a number of new business and eateries opened in recent months, but long-established businesses are also reinvesting in themselves and the village.”
In addition, Sullivan Renaissance recently invested nearly $7,000 to purchase six custom fabricated outdoor game tables that match the benches on Broadway. This summer, four game tables will be installed in the outdoor space at the Crawford Library, and two will be installed at Sharoff Park, providing additional outdoor seating for the community.
This car overturned on Route 306 near Route 202 at about 4 Saturday morning. The vehicle slammed into a telephone pole snapping it and bringing down power lines before the car flipped over. The driver did not stick around but was later located by Ramapo police. Charges are pending.
