HYDE PARK – Two people in a car that got stuck on railroad tracks near River Point Road in Hyde Park Friday morning escaped injury when they were able to get out before the vehicle was struck by an oncoming Amtrak train.
None of the 178 passengers and four crew members aboard the train was injured in the 9:39 a.m. incident.
Fairview firefighters and Mobile Life Support Service were on the scene with the State Police, Hyde Park Police and MTA Police handing the investigation.
Governor Cuomo used this latest incident to continue his push for improved railroad crossing safety.
“This is a serious issue that must be addressed before the end of the legislative session in order to prevent more senseless and avoidable tragedies,” Cuomo said.
State Senator Susan Serino (R, Hyde Park) said that while no one was injured in Friday’s incident, “over 200 people in the US lost their lives in similar events last year.”
