SUFFERN – A Suffern man was arrested on a charge that he stole a gold Lunette used to hold the Eucharist in Catholic churches, from Sacred Heart Church in Suffern.
Village Police charged Walter Hand, 53, with burglary, grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and criminal trespass.  He allegedly broke into the church last Friday afternoon, took the article off the altar, placed it under his jacket and walked out of the church.
Through the use of church surveillance cameras, Hand was identified and arrested.  Further investigation determined Hand had over 20 prior arrests, two prior felony convictions and was remanded to the Rockland County Jail without bail.
The Lunette was recovered.
