GOSHEN – Orange County Commissioner of Emergency Service Walter Koury will retire effective June 30.
Koury was appointed the county’s first commissioner of Emergency Services in 2004.  He has been commissioner for 12 years following a 30-year career with the New Windsor Town Police Department. He served as chief for 20 years.
“Walt has served Orange County with dignity and class,” said County Executive Steven Neuhaus.
Koury was instrumental in the county’s development of the state-of-the-art Emergency Services Center in the Town of Goshen, which opened in mid-2008.
He worked with the county’s Public Safety and Emergency Service Legislative Committee to gain approval for $11 million in additional funding to provide public safety agencies mobile and portable radios. They will be provided to at least five county departments and to 100 police, fire and EMS agencies in the county. They are scheduled to be operational next year.
