Wright’s casket leaves the church
NEWBURGH – Funeral services were held Thursday at Newburgh’s
Ebenezer Baptist church for 51-year-old Glenton “Superman”
Wright who died on Friday evening, March 25 after being shot.
Wright was originally from Trelawny Jamaica, West Indies, moving to Newburgh
18 years ago where he resided until his death. He was well known as a
musician, a lover of music, a health drink enthusiast, a foodie and a
man always willing to engage others in order to bring the best out of
them.
Reverend Julius Collins said during the service that he did not know Wright,
but from he has heard, he was a wonderful human being.
“When you ran into Superman, Superman would stand up and Superman
would make you feel good about yourself and where you were trying to go.”
Wright’s friends and family, as well as the rest of the city’s
community, are outraged by the continuing violence. Some who attended
the funeral spoke of becoming almost desensitized, seeing violent deaths
in Newburgh as something that have and will continue to be part of life.
Wright’s friend, community activist Omari Shakur, said he was “in
the right place at the wrong time; that’s all, but right now, we
have to change this because he’s gone home now. The rest of us,
we’re here. We’ve got to go through this every day, like the
preacher said and we need to fix this because if we don’t we’re
the ones out here suffering,” said Shakur. “So, this is for
us today. This is a message for us to say something about this and do
something about this,” he said.
Shakur’s grandson is currently in ICU recovering from near fatal
gunshot wounds that happened in the city just over a week after Wright
was shot.
