NEWBURGH – Police continue to investigate the shooting of a 17-year-old Newburgh youth who was shot twice in the back as he walked in the area of 207 Lake Drive in Newburgh Tuesday afternoon.
The victim is the grandson of community activist Omari Shakur of Newburgh. He revealed that information to MidHudsonNews.com in an email. Shakur said the youth was in the St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital intensive care unit. Police said he was being treated for non-life threatening injuries. He was transported there by a relative.
Shortly after the 3:45 p.m. incident, investigators reported that a black SUV had pulled up to the victim on the street. Four men got out, one armed with a gun and another with a baseball bat. After the assault, they fled in the vehicle.
Mayor Judy Kennedy Wednesday called the violence in the city “insanity,” which she said must stop.
“This is absolutely unacceptable; it’s insanity. We have young people killing each other for stupid reasons; it’s not even stupid reasons. It’s stupidity,” the mayor said.
The city council will conduct a second meeting on violence in Newburgh at the Boys and Girls Club tonight evening at 7 p.m.
