ALBANY – Counties in the Mid-Hudson Valley plagued with gun violence will receive round three GIVE grants from the state. The initiative – the Gun Involved Violence Elimination program, provides funds to fight crime through training, personnel, prosecutors, crime analysts, overtime and equipment.
The new round runs from July 1 through June 31 of next year.
Orange County will receive over $753,000 to be divided among the city police departments in Newburgh and Middletown, District Attorney’s Office, Sheriff’s Office and Probation Department. DA David Hoovler said the program primarily targets the City of Newburgh.
“The GIVE program targets gun violence reduction,” Hoovler said. “Those that are most likely to kill or be killed, we focus on trying to transition them from committing crimes to basically being productive members of society.”
Westchester County will receive the biggest chunk of funding in the region with over $1.2 million to be split between the Yonkers and Mount Vernon Police departments, District Attorney’s Office, Department of Public Safety and Probation Department.
Dutchess County will receive over $343,000 to be shared by the Poughkeepsie City Police Department, District Attorney’s Office, Sheriff’s Office and Probation Department.
