BREWSTER – The annual procession marking the path Christ took to Mount Calvary on the day of his crucifixion – the Stations of the Cross – was recreated in Brewster, Newburgh and Middletown on Good Friday. It is a tradition of those of the Catholic faith held in many communities around the Hudson Valley and the world.
In each procession, a man portraying Christ carries a large wooden cross through the streets while parishioners follow.
The tradition is very popular in particular in Latin and Central America. “In my homeland, everything stops on Good Friday,” said Jorge Nobles, a Brewster resident and native of Mexico, who said prayer consumes the whole day.

The Brewster procession has been celebrated every year since 2000 with hundreds of residents, young and old, taking part.
