POUGHKEEPSIE – The killing of Poughkeepsie High School senior Caval Haylett may have been the consequence of retaliatory gunfire.
Police have said the 18-year-old basketball star was struck and killed by gunfire that was intended for someone else.
Mayor Robert Rolison said on Wednesday authorities are looking at the theory that the shooter was planning to retaliate against someone else.
“From what we believe at this point that the shooting at that location was most likely related to another shooting previously and the victims of the shootings was not the intended targets,” Rolison said. “All too often that can happen when the shooters are firing into a crowd of people. While there may have been an intended target, unfortunately the individuals that got hit were not and Caval lost his life because of that.”
Another 18-year-old young man was shot in the arm that same night.
No one has been arrested in either case.
