Fire hits Poughkeepsie recycling business

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Fairview Fire District with the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department was dispatched to Eastern Metal Recycling 51 Fulton Street, for a reported vehicle on fire next to fuel tank. Upon arrival shortly before 3 p.m. firefighters found a number of vehicles, tires, batteries, a shed, and other salvage material on fire with flames extending to other materials and up a hill towards structures. Additional companies were requested to the scene to assist due to the scope of the incident and size of the fire.
No injuries were sustained by emergency services personnel or civilians. There was no damage to any of the surrounding structures.
The fire was declared to be out 4:08 pm. The cause of the fire has been determined to be a spark igniting gasoline fumes in a work area where fluids are removed from vehicles before they are salvaged.
Assisting at the scene were City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department, Roosevelt Fire District, Arlington Fire District, Mobile Life Support Services, New York State Department of Environmental Conversation, and Town of Poughkeepsie Police, Fire Inspector, and Water Department.
