BUCHANAN – A number of environmental and health organizations called for the immediately closure of the Indian Point nuclear power plants. The call on Wednesday by the six groups comes following the recent leak of radioactive water from three monitoring wells.
The Sierra Club, Riverkeeper, Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, the Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition, Scenic Hudson and Physicians for Social responsibility are asking Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Stephen Burns to order suspension of plant operations until Indian Point’s safety is thoroughly reviewed by state and federal investigators.
This water spill was the seventh incident in eight months, the groups said.
Entergy officials said after the water leaks that they did not pose any health or safety issues to water on- or off-site.
