GOSHEN – The long-awaited extension of Orange County’s Heritage Trail north from Goshen into and through the City of Middletown should become a reality in the next year or so.
The county legislature on Thursday approved bonding of some $8.9 million for the work, which has full support of Middletown officials. Alderman Jerry Kleiner was at the legislative session.
“It’s going to be a real boon, I think, to the whole county, but specifically to Middletown. When people realize what an economic engine it is, they’ve really come around to supporting it,” Kleiner said.
County Executive Steven Neuhaus is fully behind it.
“It’s going to be a wonderful boost to tourism, transportation, and more important than anything, the Orange County residents,” he said he uses the trail on a regular basis. “It is one of the most utilized outdoor recreational opportunities in the county.”
Neuhaus said the Heritage Trail is ranked the second most used recreational facility in Orange County.
With engineering being finalized, officials hope construction can begin by the end of this year.
