NEW WINDSOR – A new air carrier is considering flights from Stewart Airport near Newburgh. A.J. Rossi, president of Northeast Airlines, would like to begin service in late spring or early summer.
Rossi told MidHudsonNews.com that talks with Stewart have been going on since Thanksgiving.
The number of flights and destinations have yet to be worked out, he
said, but service is being considered to Florida, the Carolinas, Alabama
and the Caribbean.
The goal of using Stewart would be as a gateway to New York City. Rossi said “details are currently being ratified with the current administration of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, but the overall blueprint has been devised and commitments are now on the table between the two groups that are leveraged to inking a final deal for the presence at Stewart.”
Port Authority officials could not immediately be reached for comment on the potential deal.
The plan for Northeast Airlines is to provide an alternative to the crowded facilities at JFK and LaGuardia airports, also operated by the Port Authority. Persons flying into Stewart would be offered ground transportation to New York City via bus or Metro-North Railroad, Rossi said.
The airline president said he is in the process of acquiring airplanes for his service.
Rossi’s parent company, Volare Air Group, has also developed cargo service as Yellow Freight System by Northeast, he told Mid-Hudson News.
Presently at Stewart, American Airlines flies to its Philadelphia hub and Delta Air Lines operates to Detroit. From those hubs, passengers can connect to their networks of destinations. Jet Blue flies to Florida from Stewart and Allegiant Air operates to Florida and offers vacation packages to the Sunshine State.
