Flames shoot out of apartment building

PORT JERVIS – Dozens of firefighters fought a two-alarm fire in
Port Jervis Wednesday afternoon which began around noon in a ground floor
apartment at 80 Jersey Avenue. The building also housed two local businesses,
Color Me Crazy hair salon and My Sister’s Treasures thrift shop.

A tenant in the back apartment, Scott Baker, was airlifted to Westchester
Medical Center after sustaining smoke inhalation and severe burns to body.

Baker told police that he had been sleeping in his apartment when he awoke
to find his home on fire, with most of the fire coming from the kitchen
area.
Baker’s clothing was on fire as he broke a window to exit the building.

The victim was assisted on scene by nearby residents and businesspersons
and was transported to Bon Secours Hospital and airlifted to another facility
for further care.

Port Jervis Fire Chief Frank Fuller said the fire was brought under control
within an hour despite challenges faced by strong winds, very cold weather
conditions, and several false ceilings within the structure.

Fire units were still on scene as of 4 p.m.
