SLATE HILL – Two of the so-called “Wawayanda Six,” people arrested on disorderly conduct charges in connection with a recent protest at the entrance of the construction site for the gas-powered electric generating plant, were arraigned in Wawayanda Town Court Monday night. The two protestors, Madeline Shaw and Pramilla Malick, had locked themselves to each other along with actor James Cromwell. His appearance date was changed; however, the two women were in court along with some 40 supporters.
Attorney Michael Sussman represented the women in the effort to stop
construction of the Competitive Power Ventures’ 650 megawatt facility.
He called it “mindless” for a plant to use fracked natural
gas to generate electricity.
“It is necessary for us to stop it, and when I say by whatever means necessary, I mean peaceful means, which have been used by people who feel strongly about environmental degradation for generations. We are part of that movement and our forbearers led that movement and we have to continue it in order to ensure that this madness doesn’t overtake this planet,” Sussman told supporters after the court appearance.
The defendants are due back in town court on January 21.
