GOSHEN – A Harriman man was arraigned in Orange County Court on Monday in connection with the November 24, 2015 attempted robbery and shooting of a man outside a Harriman deli.
Matthew Bauman, 26, had been indicted by a grant jury on felony charges of attempted robbery, attempted assault, assault, grand larceny and weapons offenses.  Bail was set at $250,000 cash or $750,000 bond.
On the evening of November 24, Bauman attempted to get money to support his heroin addiction and stole a licensed handgun from his father’s home. He went to the Quick Stop deli on River Road in the Village of Harriman with the intention of robbing it.  There, he confronted a man outside the deli and pulled the gun and as the victim ran away, Bauman shot him in the back of the shoulder with the bullet traveling through his shoulder and all the way through his arm. The man’s injuries were no not life threatening and he was treated and released at Westchester Medical Center.
“Drug addiction drives much of the violence that plagues our communities, and this case amply illustrates that,” District Attorney David Hoovler said. “I have dedicated my office to an effort to help stop the drug epidemic through education and treatment. But when those efforts fail, resulting in injuries to innocent people, we will vigorously enforce the law against those whose addictions provide fuel for their violent acts.”
