Old jail

KINGSTON – Ulster County Government will use its recently received $200,000 from the state to study the cost to raze the old county jail in Kingston and convert the site into property to be redeveloped by a private sector business.
County Executive Michael Hein said the job of leveling the facility will cost significantly more, but the state money, part of the consolidated funding application process, will help.
“That will assist in the process as will the work that will be done to take it down, but also to reclaim of some of commodities inside,” he said. “The huge steel plates are throughout the facility that will assist in the process as well, but in the end, the goal is to have a shovel ready site for incoming businesses to our community that are going to pay taxes and hire people.”
Hein said it won’t be easy to take down the old jail since it was designed to be extremely study.
The county has not sought any interest in the site, waiting instead to make it shovel ready for business.
