GOSHEN – A new program has been implemented for driving while intoxicated offenders in Orange County.
District Attorney David Hoovler said the numbers of DWI cases are slightly down and a new plea bargain program is helping to reduce the instances.
“What we found with our new plea bargaining policy, it requires first time offenders, if they want to avail themselves of a plea bargain, they have to get evaluated to see if they have an alcohol or mental health problem that would affect them in the future and what we found is by forcing them to get this evaluation we have been able to reduce the amount of re-offense by just under 10 percent,” the DA said.
Hoovler expects as the program continues, the instances of re-offense will decline.
