POUGHKEEPSIE –Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik’s term comes to a close at the end of the week, but he still believes merging the city’s bus system with Dutchess County’s LOOP buses is the right way to go.
Under his proposal, which was rejected by the common council several months ago, the county would have taken over the city’s service with no loss of routes or employees.
Tkazyik believes at some point in the future, the consolidation of services will have to be made.
“The general fund continues to subsidize the transit fund between $400,000 and $600,000 a year and something needs to give,” he said. “It is a redundancy of service and both the governor and the county executive, they are always touting ways to look for continued shared services and this is one of those areas where the bus system could be one system in Dutchess County while still providing adequate service to our residents who depend on it most.”
At this point, it is unknown if the idea will be advanced by the new
administration, headed by mayor-elect Robert Rolison.
