GOSHEN – A Town of Newburgh man pled guilty in Orange County Court on Monday to felony charges of repeated failure to file personal income tax returns in violation of tax law and fraudulent practices in violation of the workers’ compensation law.
Scott Duffie, 61, owner of Duffie Electric, admitted that he failed to file personal income tax returns from 2011 through 2013, and cheated his workers’ compensation carrier by underestimated his payroll.
Each offense carries a maximum of 1 1/3 to four years in state prison when sentenced in February.
Duffie’s business has been operating since at least 1982 and has worked on federal and state public works projects, which generally are awarded to the lowest bidder.
District Attorney David Hoovler said the investigation arose as a result of a referral from a labor union.
