NEWBURGH – City officials in Newburgh are in a bind. The city’s capital project needs are in the tens of millions — $40 million for a new police station alone – and funding for the bare bones items has been shot down.
The city council and administration had whittled down the immediate needs to a little over $6 million worth, but when the bonding came up for a vote this week, it was rejected by a majority of council members.
City Comptroller John Aber enumerated the immediate needs before they were shot down.
“This resolution covers the purchase of four new police vehicles,
a camera truck to stop long-term patrol plan, work to be done at Machados
Dam, Brown’s Pond, and other work at the water department,”
Aber said.
But, the bond, which needed five votes, only got four, and was rejected.
