TOWN OF WALLKILL – If you saw a lot of police and fire department activity in the Town of Wallkill on Saturday, it was only a drill.
At about 7 a.m., the town Office of emergency Management conducted the training exercise simulating an explosion and hazardous material leak at Advanced Coating Technologies.
During the simulation, members of the Silver Lake Fire Department and Wallkill Police responded to a purported smoke alarm at the Turner Drive facility.  Responding firefighters were confronted with a scenario that quickly evolved into a larger scale emergency that impacted the entire facility and spread to the surrounding area.
Several other fire departments were called in along with the State Police, hazardous materials personnel, and emergency medical services.
The purpose of the drill was to evaluate the town’s response to large scale emergencies. That included communications, plan review and general preparedness.
Participating in the drill were fire departments from Circleville, Mechanicstown, Bloomingburg, Howells, and Huguenot, as well as the Orange County Hazardous Materials Team, the Orange County Division of Emergency Communications, Mobile Life Support Services and State Police.
