GOSHEN – Orange County Legislator Shannon Wong is stepping down from her position effective November 4 to take the job as director of the New York Civil Liberties Union’s Lower Hudson Valley Chapter.
Wong wrote that she has “a deep passion for social justice and civil rights” and that is why she is taking the new post.
“I am a social worker by training and passion, I have often said. I am deeply committed to working on civil rights issues, social justice issues and moving to the New York Civil Liberties Union really allows me to do that on a very fulltime basis,” she said.
County Legislature Chairman Stephen Brescia, a Republican, said Democrat Wong was a dedicated lawmaker and she will be missed.
“She was a hard working legislator, researched issues, was very passionate about the issues she felt strongly about and she worked hard,” Brescia said.
There are two years remaining in the four-year term. A replacement for her will be named by the town boards in the area that she represents, predominantly Goshen. Whoever is appointed would have to run for the final year of the term and then run the following year for a full four years.
“When I began my campaign in 2012, I was on a mission to put people over politics, to work with everyone to respond to the needs of our county and to help the constituents of my district,” Wong wrote in a letter to top county officials. “I also had three core priorities: renovate the Orange County Government Center, protect Valley View, and support local agriculture.”
