CORTLANDT – Cell phone companies often print coverage maps that misrepresent the area that their signals cover, Senator Charles Schumer claimed as he stood in the Town of Cortlandt near the Camp Smith Trail on Monday.
He wants those companies to be more accurate when drafting coverage maps for a number of reasons.
“It’s a safety problem if you think you are going to be covered and you are not, but second, if they were forced to make the maps accurate, then they would make the service better because it’s a selling point to get customers,” Schumer said.
The senator said there are “more cell phone dead zones in Northern Westchester and Putnam counties than post-winter potholes on the West Side Highway – and misrepresenting coverage maps to give the impression in an area where it does not is false advertising, pure and simple.”
