MONTICELLO – Route 97, running 70 miles along the Delaware River from Port Jervis to Hancock, is one of 20 scenic byways nominated by USA Today for the designation of “Best Scenic Autumn Drive.”
Readers can vote for their choice at the newspaper’s Best Scenic Autumn Drive readers’ choice contest.  The deadline is noon September 28.
As of this morning, the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway was ranked number 2 in the voting, behind the M-22 drive in Michigan, along the shore of Lake Michigan.
Sullivan County Legislator Kitty Vetter said this kind of thing has happened before, with the hamlet of Roscoe.
“Just as Trout Town USA became because people in the community voted for it, and we won out of many rivers in Colorado, we could win the Sullivan County Byway as the best ride in the United States.”
Vetter is urging county residents, and anyone else, to vote early and vote often.  She says you can vote once per day from the same ISP.
Route 97 faces tough competition.  Other well-known drives around the country include the Skyline Drive in Virginia, Coastal Route 1 in Maine, Columbia River Highway in Oregon and 16 others across the country.
