BREWSTER – A no-hitter pitched in baseball or softball is one of the most exciting events in the world of sports.

In Major League Baseball history only 323 no-hitters have been pitched.

Putnam County is now in the record books thanks to two athletes at Brewster High School who this week each pitched a no hitter.

Sophomore Giana Kusterer was perfect against Lakeland High School while Brewster High School Senior Colin Krebs pitched his no-hitter against Sleepy Hollow.

Kusterer attributed her prowess to her screwball. “It had a lot of movement, and I threw a lot of high and outside fast balls which caught hitters off-guard,” she said. “My catcher was great at helping me decide which pitches to throw. It really was a team effort. We really came together as a team. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Krebs was also ecstatic. “In the first inning I allowed too many hitters on base, but by the second inning I got into a groove and started cruising.

In the third inning, there was a long fly ball to center field, and Drew Velardo made a diving catch. That was a big catch, and I breathed a sigh of relief.  It wasn’t until the middle of the game that I realized I was on my way to a no-hitter. After the last out, everyone went crazy and congratulated me,” he said.

His parents and my brother were there, and they thought it was terrific. “I got the game ball signed by the team and a ball from Mr. Berardo to mark the occasion.” Dean Berardo is the district’s athletic director.
