KINGSTON – Ulster County Executive Michael Hein signed a local law on Thursday establishing a sustainable green fleet policy for county vehicles.
The new policy requires the county to purchase or lease energy efficient and cost effective vehicles to meet the operational needs of the county.  The law also requires the county to purchase green vehicles that use sustainable alternative fuel technology, noted Hein.
“We will continue to expand our alternative fuel vehicles and as we do it’s nice to see a fleet policy from the Ulster County Legislature that embraces that,” Hein said. “I gladly signed it and I look forward to making sure that we partner with all the stakeholders to make sure Ulster County is not only the healthiest, but also the most environmentally friendly county in the State of New York.”
County Legislature Minority Leader Kenneth Ronk, a co-sponsor of the measure, said the policy “completes a long journey of hard work, dialogue and partnership experienced across the legislative aisle.”
“Sustainable alternative fuel technology as well as more efficient vehicles are a more logical way for us to reduce the environmental impact of our operations while saving taxpayer dollars on fuel,” said said Amanda LaValle, Coordinator of Ulster County Department of the Environment.  She noted that all UCAT buses are now biodiesel and the county is in the process of purchasing plug-in hybrid sedans.
