MIDDLETOWN – Middletown’s downtown and community campus at the former state psychiatric center could flourish if the city’s latest consolidated funding applications are selected for grant funding.
Mayor Joseph DeStefano outlined to the common council Tuesday night a long list of projects, both public and private sector that would aid in the redevelopment of the city.
“Middletown is an old city which we had in which we had our prosperous years and then we had our bad years,” DeStefano said.  “We are not the only city in New York State to do that, but I also think we are way ahead of the game on redevelopment. We have had a lot of success in the area of controlling crime for an urban center. We have had population growth, which is something many cities in New York have not experienced. We have experienced a double-digit growth in population.”
Grant funding, if the city wins in the state’s Mid-Hudson competition, would support everything from redevelopment of city-owned and private sector buildings for business to a major rebirth of the former state psychiatric center property.
