PHILADELPHIA – Pine Island farmer Christopher Pawelski was returning from Washington, DC Thursday afternoon aboard Amtrak Northeast Regional 186-DC-NYC when the train struck and killed a pedestrian near Croydon, Pennsylvania.
Pawelski was in the first car behind the engine when the incident occurred.
“It was a very pronounced thump that you heard and felt and it was something very substantial and the train came to a stop and we knew it was something very serious,” he said.
There were 347 passengers aboard – no injuries were reported to passengers or crew. Two other trains were brought in to transport the passengers to their final destination.
Pawelski was heading back home after meetings with lawmakers when the incident occurred. He said a conductor announced the fatal incident that involved a person on the tracks.
