MONTICELLO – Discussions
have begun among Sullivan County municipal leaders and the county about
the possibility of developing a sales tax sharing agreement.

At present there is none in Sullivan; Ulster, Dutchess and Orange are
among area counties that do share county sales tax with localities.

Following a Sullivan County Council of Governments session on Tuesday,
Legislature Chairman Scott Samuelson said the discussion was a good first
start.

“What we need to do is take a look at what our obligations are going
forward. We all know we have to build a jail; we need have a request from
the college. There are a number of things the county has on its horizon,”
he said. “If we look at that and we set the bar at a certain level,
then it makes sense to start a conversation on how we might distribute
anything above that.”
It is anticipated that with the casino and resort complex to be build
and other development under discussion that sales tax revenue coming into
Sullivan will rise significantly.
