NANUET – Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D, NY17) went to Meals on Wheels of Rockland in Nanuet on Thursday to announce her new legislation to provide a Social Security earning credit to caregivers who have to leave their jobs or reduce their hours to care for a loved one.
Lowey said roughly 65 million Americans sacrifice their jobs or reduce
their hours during their careers to provide care to family members.
“This would be particularly helpful for women who make up 66 percent of unpaid caregivers who average lose $324,000 in wages and retirement benefits in their lifetime,” she said.
Lowey said the bill would create a credit that would be added to earnings to calculate future Social Security benefits.
