KINGSTON – An Ulster County grand
jury has concluded a Kingston police officer involved shooting on May
25 was justified.

On May 28 at about 11:50 p.m., Kingston Police Officer Fellows and several
other city officers were dispatched to a burglary in progress at the Chase
Bank branch in Kingston Plaza. When responding to the call, Officer Fellows
located a man walking in the parking lot near the rear of Hannaford’s
supermarket.

That man, later identified as Alexander Jefferies, matched the description
of the burglary suspect. The officer stopped his marked patrol car and
opened the door to interview Jefferies at which time Jefferies pointed
what appeared to be a handgun at him.

Officer Fellows responded to the threat and fired once, striking Jefferies
in the abdomen.

The handgun that Jefferies pointed at the officer turned out to be a black
CO2 pistol.

The investigation into the shooting was conducted by the State Police
and Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.
