ALBANY – Three of 19 sites have been approved by the state for automated early warning weather detection systems.
The Mesonet stations provide localized, accurate, and timely data on
air, wind, soil, and radiation conditions. Data is transmitted in real-time
to a central facility at the University of Albany where it is processed
and disseminated, including to the National Weather Service and state
Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services.
In the Hudson Valley, the systems will be installed at Valatie Research Farm in Columbia County, SUNY Rockland in Suffern, and Woodstock at Stang Farms in Ulster County.
The National Weather Service has 27 automated weather stations already collecting weather data in New York.
